Plugs, (our modern day gages) were not only tied to the African culture. This prominent display of ritualistic body modification occurs in Indian, Pacific Islander, and Latin cultures.
The women of the Apatani tribe, located in the Arunachal Pradesh of India, were considered to be the most beautiful women in the land. This resulted in their lands being raided, and their women constantly being kidnapped. In order to prevent this, the women began wear nose plugs and tattoo their faces in an effort to appear unattractive to rival tribes.
